Job Description:
BIOLOGICAL FIELD TECHNICIANS are needed by the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory to conduct nocturnal surveys of multiple owl species. Field work will be conducted in Colorado in April and May 2008. Technicians will broadcast recordings of owls at specified intervals and locations from roads and trails and will record any owls detected. Back-country hiking and snowshoeing at night will be required. Suitable candidates must be able to navigate using map, compass, and GPS unit. Additional duties include data entry and other project management tasks. A valid driver's license, personal vehicle, proof of auto insurance, hiking gear, a strong work ethic, and good humor are required. Housing will be provided and mileage will be reimbursed. Salary $2000-2500/month, depending on experience. |

Job Description:
PAID ATLAS POSITIONS (3) available for South Dakota’s Breeding Bird Atlas II. One position available approximately May 1 – July 15, two positions approximately May 15 – July 15. Main duties will be to search atlas blocks for evidence of breeding birds using standard atlas procedures, conduct point counts, and data entry. After an initial training period, atlaser will work independently in their assigned blocks, usually within an area covering approximately 1/8 - 1/4 of the state. Work entails considerable interactions with landowners, and long hours, including pre-dawn counts, in hot, mosquito-ridden conditions. Salary $1950/mo plus mileage reimbursement and lodging stipend. |
Job Requirements:
Ability to identify breeding birds by sight and sound in at least one of South Dakota’s biomes (Great Plains grasslands, western grasslands/sagebrush, eastern forests, prairie pothole wetlands, or Black Hills), excellent hearing and birding skills, and ability to read and follow topo maps are required; atlasing or point count experience are a plus. A valid driver's license, personal vehicle, proof of auto insurance, and binoculars are required; camping gear strongly recommended. Internships are also available for those looking to gain experience. |

Job Requirements:
The intern must be able to communicate clearly, be dedicated to the conservation of birds and their habitats, and have a limited knowledge of current statistical and database tools.
Required Knowledges: Apache, PHP, MySQL, Javascript, CGI, .NET, C#, Visual Studio.
Additional Knowledges: Access, SQL Server, SQL language, XML, AJAX, VB.NET.
In addition the intern should have basic knowledge of server technologies, LAN, WAN and VPN.

The workshops will take place in Colorado, after which interns will shadow RMBO staff conducting bird surveys throughout the study area. The standard work week will be ten days on/four days off. Interns will ride along with RMBO staff for a minimum of one ten day period, after which they can stay on as long as they wish. Interns will be expected to study Western Birds by sight and sound before and during the field season. Bird song CDs are available for study purposes. Interns should expect to hike off-trail regularly in steep, rugged terrain, sometimes under difficult conditions. Primitive camping, often without phone service or facilities, will be required. Interns will gain experience conducting point-counts, identifying western trees and shrubs, backcountry hiking, and navigation (w/ maps, compass, and GPS). |

Job Description:
Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory’s Stewardship Division is hiring a biologist to assist with a wide variety of outreach activities and habitat project implementation. The Stewardship Biologist will be responsible for assisting with landowner workshops, conducting bird inventories on private lands throughout eastern Colorado, visiting with private farmers and ranchers, and promotion of the Colorado Birding Trail and other economic diversification efforts, as well as various other outreach activities. The position will also assist with the development, implementation and monitoring of current and future habitat enhancement projects and partnerships. Various administrative tasks related to workshops and project development will also be necessary, including basic budget tracking and gathering of outreach materials.
This position is based out of Ft. Collins, Colorado and will begin as soon as a suitable applicant is found. This is currently a 6-month position but extension is probable based upon upcoming funding opportunities. Salary range is $28-32,000 (depending on qualifications) with a negotiable benefits package. This is an excellent opportunity to assist with the conservation and enhancement of wildlife habitat on thousands of acres of land. The Stewardship Biologist will also learn or hone their skills regarding the “ins-and-outs” of many different private-land conservation programs, including Farm Bill, Colorado Division of Wildlife, and NGO programs.

Job Requirements:
Applicants should have at least a Bachelor’s degree with a background in natural resources and/or agriculture and 2 years experience. Strong written/oral communication skills and a sense of humor are a must. The position will require extensive travel throughout eastern Colorado and the Great Plains and the ability to be on the road for days at a time is required. Applicants with experience and/or interest in range/wildlife management, habitat restoration, conservation/cost share programs, outreach, farming and ranching practices and the preservation of rural lifestyles are encouraged to apply. |
