Women Afield is a series of day-long field trips for girls ages 11-15.
These field trips focus on some aspect of science, often involving wildlife
and/or nature, and allow participants the opportunity to experience and
discover science in a fun, unthreatening (no put-downs, negative comments, or
discouraging messages) environment. Educational statistics suggest that as
girls advance through middle and high school, their achievement in both science
and math decreases. Some young girls erroneously and regretfully perceive that
science is "for boys". This is most unfortunate for those girls who have true
talents and abilities in science and who may choose, due to a lack of
encouragement, a non-science career that will be unfulfilling and stifling.
By providing fun, non-competitive, and nurturing opportunities to explore and
discover science, RMBO's Women Afield program can provide the extra, or
missing, encouragement that young girls need in order to stay involved in
scientific pursuits. RMBO feels that with these opportunities, participants can
discover and nurture innate talents and develop the self-confidence of strong
women who can go on to make an impact in a male-dominated career field. We feel
that this program provides influential experiences for young girls from which
to build upon and grow.
Past field trips have included a visit to a local wetland area with RMBO's
Wetland Biologist, Alison Cariveau, to discover what life is found there and
what conditions are necessary for that life to exist. Another outing took the
girls to The Denver Museum of Nature and Science for a "behind-the-scenes" tour
of the Museum's study skins collections with Avian Specialist, Kirsty Bay.
