In 2002, in cooperation with the Mexican National Commission for the Knowledge and
Use of Biodiversity Information (CONABIO) and Cornell Lab of Ornithology, RMBO began
a process of applying the Partners in Flight species assessment process to the entire
Mexican avifauna. This project was the culmination of several years of discussions
and deliberations on how to facilitate better international cooperation to increase
and better prioritize and coordinate resources for bird conservation.
Over the course of 3 years, RMBO facilitated 3 national workshops and 4 regional
workshops involving over 100 Mexican biologists to systematically evaluate the biological
vulnerability of each Mexican bird species at regional and continental scales.
These data are being used by Partners in Flight to develop a North American perspective
and vision for strategic landbird conservation across the continent. It is also
expected that CONABIO will publish the all-bird assessment. Through building a strong
biological foundation, we hope to increase attention and resources for shared conservation
responsibilities throughout the continent.
