State Programs

In 1995, RMBO, in conjunction with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the United States Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service, began efforts to create and conduct a Colorado-wide program to monitor breeding bird populations. This was the first attempt in the nation to develop and implement a statewide all-bird monitoring plan. Since 1999, RMBO has expanded its monitoring efforts to include neighboring states using a similar transect selection protocol and survey methodology. In addition to monitoring bird populations, the state-wide monitoring programs generate information useful in managing birds (e.g., habitat associations, avian spatial distribution). These monitoring programs also are consistent with goals emphasized by the U.S. North American Bird Conservation Initiative Committee (U.S. NABCI Monitoring Subcommittee, 2007).
