STEWARDSHIP

Private landowners and agricultural producers (i.e., farmers, ranchers) play a critical role in providing habitat for birds and wildlife as well as food and fiber for people. At Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, we believe healthy wildlife habitat and healthy human communities can more than just co-exist – they can thrive with proper management and stewardship.

An important goal of RMBO’s Stewardship program (originally Prairie Partners) is to increase private landowners’ and resource professionals’ understanding of wildlife and their habitat needs by sharing information from RMBO’s Science program and other research. Our ongoing presence in local communities strengthens relationships among private landowners and state, federal and private conservation entities. This work has led to a voluntary coalition of landowners and resource professionals committed to bird habitat conservation in the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, and Intermountain West regions.

Since it began in 2003, the Stewardship program has connected with more than 15,000 people in our outreach efforts. We have worked with more than 120 landowners to help enhance 100,000-plus acres of habitat in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota and Texas.

We have been adding Private Lands Wildlife Biologists to our staff since 2008 to work across the region. They add another dimension to the Stewardship program by working directly with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Bill Conservation Programs and other agencies to assist landowners with conservation projects.
