Birds Beyond Borders

Grade 3-8
Program Fee: 205/ class
Duration: August- May
Standards: Meets Colorado Science, Reading, Geography and Foreign Language Standards

Birds Beyond Borders/ Aves Sin Fronteras is an international exchange program that links classrooms in the United States with classrooms in Mexico through our shared resource of migratory birds. Throughout the school year, classrooms:
• Take field trips to local natural areas to see and learn about bird’s first-hand.
• Receive classroom instruction to enhance field experiences.
• Receive bilingual education materials.
• Exchange three letter with their sister school in Central or South America.
• Design and implement a conservation project that benefits birds.

In addition to content learning, BBB provides students with an opportunity to learn about another culture, or in the case of some of our native Latino participants, an opportunity to connect with their homeland. Our hope is that program participation will help students understand the geographic borders needs not be barriers when we are all working toward a common goal. This lesson, learned at a young age, increases the likelihood that these students will become environmentally conscious adults with the knowledge that disregarding boundaries is essential to worldwide conservation efforts.
In keeping with the Birds Beyond Borders goal of encouraging past participants to care about birds and the habitats that birds need to survive, RMBO will facilitate conservation projects with participation schools/classes. Some possible projects may include:
• Native habitat development on school grounds.
• Clean-up or habitat improvement at local natural areas.
• Installation of nesting boxes for a variety of bird species.
• Public awareness campaigns concerning bird conservation issues.

By actively involving students in a conservation project we are providing them with an opportunity to observe how their caring for birds can make a difference in the world.
